ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ Alum Zohran Mamdani ’14 Is the Next Mayor of New York City Following Historic Election

The winner of a three-way race for the seat, the mayor-elect earned more than one million votes with a near-record voter turnout.
At ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ, Mamdani majored in Africana studies, with a minor in government, and worked on the staff of The ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ Orient. After graduating in 2014, he worked as a foreclosure prevention housing counselor in Queens, NY. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 to represent Astoria and was reelected in 2022 and 2024.
Mayor-elect Mamdani announced his mayoral candidacy in October 2024. During the Democratic primary in June 2025, he defeated ten other candidates in a crowded field to become his party’s nominee. With his historic election on November 4, 2025, Mamdani becomes the youngest New York City mayor in more than a century.
Mayor-elect Mamdani belongs to a long ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ tradition of graduates who have pursued careers in public service and as leaders in all walks of life. Over the generations, scores of ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ alumni have served as mayors, governors, legislators, ambassadors, and judges—from current state legislators in Tennessee and Maine to mayor Ed Lee '74 of San Francisco, US Senator and Secretary of Defense William Cohen '62, US Senator and Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell ’54, H’83, Maine Governor Joshua L. Chamberlain, Class of 1852, and the fourteenth president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, of the Class of 1824.
Mayor-elect Mamdani’s term officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on January 1, with a swearing-in ceremony typically taking place in New York City’s Times Square or City Hall. ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ joins with many voices from around the country in wishing the mayor-elect well as he steps into this important role.
